Man charged in Friday stabbing

A 22-year-old man has been charged with last week’s stabbing of an apparently sleeping victim.

Eric Davidson, 22, 701 N. Second Ave., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning. His bond has been set at $14,000, according to Lt. Ray Moore of the Greenwood Police Department.

Interfaith Ministries marks 10 years' work

Greenwood Interfaith Ministries has served almost a half-million meals to the homeless of Leflore County over the past decade.

Itta Bena smoking ban in effect soon

Itta Bena has joined dozens of Mississippi municipalities in adopting a sweeping anti-smoking ordinance.

The ordinance, which was unanimously passed by the town’s Board of Aldermen earlier this month, will go into effect as early as Jan. 7 — the date of the next scheduled board meeting.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
