Greenwood leaders lobby for federal aid

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., visited the state Capitol on Wednesday, and state Sen. David Jordan, D-Greenwood, used the opportunity to press for more federal assistance for the Delta.

Jordan said Thompson and Republican U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker have helped the region a great deal in the past.

Mississippi’s first “Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday” begins Friday, and retailers catering to hunters are hoping to score some big bucks — that is, dollars.

“Anything helps,” said Howard Smith, owner of Smith & Co.

“The state has recognized that hunting is a huge industry. It’s very important for our economy,” he said.

City to expand weekly garbage pickup

The city of Greenwood is preparing, in as little as two weeks, to reduce garbage pickup in more areas from two times a week to one.

Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams first mentioned the planned expansion at the City Council’s meeting Tuesday.

3rd person arrested in Aug. shooting

A third suspect has been charged in the Aug. 2 drive-by shooting of teenager Dontavis McLemore.

Marquavious Smart, 20, 323 W. Taft St., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning, according to Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks.

Two other suspects, Erick Wilson, 16, and Christopher Adams, 17, have already been charged.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
