Chris and Missy McGlawn of Swiftown were named Mississippi’s 2017 Catfish Farmers of the Year in February by the Catfish Institute. The McGlawns’ farming operation of 160 water acres produces around 2 million pounds of catfish per year, and they plan to double their water acres for the 2018 crop year.

Couple state’s top catfish farmers

A Swiftown husband and wife were recently honored as the Mississippi Catfish Farmers of the Year.

Chris and Missy McGlawn, who have 160 water acres of catfish ponds, were presented the award during the Catfish Farmers of America annual convention in Orange Beach, Alabama, in February.

Farmers optimistic in spite of rain

Although rain-soaked fields might have slowed the county’s corn plant-ing, farmers remain optimistic heading into planting season.

“It’s getting to be time to go. It won’t be long now,” said George Jeffords, who manages landowner Tommy Gary’s farming operation.

Officials to travel in search of federal cash

The visit is in conjunction with the National League of Cities Congressional City Conference, which runs through Wednesday.
