What began as an idea to attract people back to Greenwood for a good, old-fashioned family get-together came to life Saturday in Whittington Park.

“We’ve been planning this since July of last year,” said Prondolyn Gray, a 1989 Greenwood High School graduate, who now lives in Olive Branch.

Fire damages doctor’s home

A house fire Friday seriously damaged the residence of a Greenwood physician.

Firefighters responded to 1302 Hemingway St., the home of Dr. Ahmed Aziz, at around 1:59 p.m.

No one was in the two-story house at the time of the fire, according to Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks.

GHS senior takes own life

A 17-year-old Greenwood High School senior, scheduled to graduate tonight, died Thursday afternoon of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The student has been identified as Larkey Keyonta Walker.

A packed house showed up Thursday at a specially called meeting of the Greenwood School Board. At the meeting, the board voted 4-1 to close W.C. Williams Elementary School. The decision drew criticism from many in the audience.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
