Greenwood Utilities lineman killed

A lineman for Greenwood Utilities was apparently electrocuted Wednesday while working on an underground transmission line.

Sean Wheat, 47, was pronounced dead at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said today.

Boys & Girls Club again offers mentoring program

The Boys & Girls Club of Greenwood is offering a one-on-one mentoring program for youth for the second year.

Last year, 19 young people came through the program, which is offered with the help of an Office of Justice Programs grant, said David Dallas, chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta.

Delta Streets Academy relies on the donations from the public to keep its doors open.

On April 30, the private Christian boys’ school received a $40,000 donation from the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity chapter of the University of Mississippi.

Heart surgery doesn't stop walker

Like a lot of people, Stephen Farmer participated in the 300 Oaks Road Race 5K walk Saturday.

Unlike a lot of people, Farmer, 52, underwent heart surgery two weeks ago and felt go enough to suit up and get out.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
