Crockett Street shooting victim in good condition

A man shot after entering a home on Crockett Street on Monday was listed in good condition this morning at a Jackson hospital with a wound to his shoulder.

The man has been identified as 38-year-old Steven Matthew Baker, Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said.

Express Grain purchases oil mill

When Greenwood’s Delta Oil Mill closed its doors in July, John Coleman saw an opportunity to keep the plant — and its 35 jobs — in Greenwood.

“It’s been a big whirlwind. I guess we started talking to Delta Oil Mill probably a year ago,” said Coleman, president of Express Grain Terminals LLC.

Bettie Ray, left, who has served as Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams’ executive secretary for six years, will retire today. Ray plans to move to Merritt Island, Florida, to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.

Mayor’s secretary retiring, moving

For six years, Bettie Ray has seen a lot of people come through the door at Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams’ office with their problems and concerns.

She calls her job as executive secretary “a public relations, customer service type of thing” and likens it to being a concierge.

Wastewater plant getting final touches

Work on Greenwood’s new $33 million wastewater treatment plant is winding down, and Mayor Carolyn McAdams is getting ready to do a little celebrating.

Plans are to have a formal ribbon-cutting in mid-November, after the plant is scrubbed down and made to shine, she said.

“It’s something else,” she said.
