Salvation Army gets cool early Christmas present

For Capt. Benjamin Deuel, Christmas came a bit early.

When temperatures were warmer than usual in the Delta in early November, Deuel, the Greenwood corps officer for the Salvation Army, noticed that the central air unit at the Salvation Army Church at 209 N. Stone Ave. wasn’t cooling.

‘Crime is out there’

More than 160 people attended a meeting Monday night at St. John’s United Methodist Church to address what they believe may be a growing crime problem in Greenwood.

Mayor Carolyn McAdams said she appreciated the turnout, which largely represented North Greenwood but also attracted residents from other parts of the city.

Volunteer enjoys helping others

Martha McMinn is a doer.

Volunteering at the Community Food Pantry, the Museum of the Mississippi Delta and Cavalry Baptist Church keeps McMinn busy. The octogenarian says staying active also helps her stay healthy.

“If I don’t, I’ll go down. I have friends that are not as old as I am and they can’t even walk,” she said.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
