Buckeye resident wants county to remove burned mobile homes

A little more than two weeks ago, a fire in the Buckeye community gutted one mobile home and damaged a neighboring one.

Now neighbor Doris Whitehead, who lives just a few feet from the home that was destroyed, is hoping Leflore County officials will act to address the problem.

Food pantry busy, getting lots of help

Voters League to hold 49th banquet

Preparations for Friday’s 49th annual Greenwood Voters League banquet are being finalized in the hopes of a big turnout.

“It’s kind of unique that an organization has lasted as long as the Voters League has. Many of the other groups that started out with us are no longer around,” said David Jordan, president of the league.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
