Firefighters to donate their venison to needy

Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks is looking to harvest a few deer before deer season ends Jan. 31 — and to donate a portion of his venison to the needy.

Banks said he and fellow firefighters Cary Hayes and Lt. Alfred King Jr. plan to donate at least 200 pounds to the Greenwood Interfaith Ministries’ Community Kitchen.

Former longtime mayor dies

Former Greenwood Mayor Harry Smith was remembered today as a hard worker who said what he thought.

“He was honest and straightforward. He was good at his work. He was attentive to the city’s business,” said Greenwood attorney and longtime friend Luke Schissel.

Annual MLK march set Sunday

In memory of the civil rights martyr’s spirit and vision, the Greenwood Voters League will hold its 31st annual march on Sunday.

Now Morris, 57, is embarking on a new venture to help spread the word about the dangers of cancer and how it can be prevented — one church at a time.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
