City to sell 5 Katrina cottages

The city of Greenwood is preparing to accept sealed bids on five single-bedroom Katrina cottages next week.

The Greenwood-Leflore Fuller Center for Housing received 26 cottages from the city in 2011 for placement in Baptist Town and other parts of the city.

Administrator accuses co-worker of assault

A Leflore County School District administrator has accused a colleague of assaulting her following a staff meeting last week.

The district’s conservator, however, says her own investigation into the alleged incident has failed to substantiate the claim made by Dr. Karina Peterson, the district’s secondary curriculum coordinator.

Program stresses reading together

The Greenwood Mentoring Group is embarking on a new program designed to get children and their parents or guardians into reading together.

The effort, known as Prime Time Family Reading Time, is a partnership between the mentoring group, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Boys & Girls night

On Thursday night, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta celebrated 40 years of service to the youth across the Delta.

The event, held at the club’s Greenwood facility on Carrollton Avenue, was held in conjunction with the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
