Man pleads guilty to cocaine charges

GREENVILLE - A Greenwood man has pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing more than 50 grams of crack cocaine.

Melvin Duncan, who court records identify only as from Greenwood and born in 1984, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the charges in U.S. District Court.

A sentencing date has yet to be set.

Palmer makes case for remaining on bench

Incumbent Justice Court Judge Carlos Palmer took only 20 minutes to make his case Wednesday night to the Voters' League.

Palmer is seeking re-election as Southern Justice Court Judge in Leflore County. The 29-year-old Democrat is one of two candidates qualified to run in the special election Nov. 8.

Trial expected Monday in federal drug case

GREENVILLE - A Greenwood man is expected to stand trial Monday in U.S. District Court here on federal drug charges.

Orlando LeWayne "Wayne" Pilcher, whom court records identify only a Greenwood resident and born in 1972, is accused of two separate counts of distributing more than 50 grams of crack cocaine.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
