Superintendents pleased with 2012 enrollment trends

Superintendents at the three area public school districts say they are pleased with the enrollment trends at their schools.

Enrollment in the Greenwood Public Schools is down slightly from the same time last year — from 2,844 to 2,832 — but is up slightly from the May total of 2,823.

The Lane Chapel Male Quintet of Tupelo performed several gospel selections Wednesday night at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church for a group of industry site-selection consultants visiting as part of a tour. Gov. Phil Bryant joined them for part of their performance.

Passed along values to students

As a teacher and coach, John Primus Banks believed in passing on the right values to young people, his wife said Tuesday.

Mr. Banks, a lifelong resident of Greenwood, died of heart failure Sept. 28 at the age of 81. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Simpson was musician, educator

Longtime musician Frances Simpson is being remembered today both for her musical talents and for her interest in education.

Mrs. Simpson, 98, died Sunday in Boulder, Colo.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in the church parlor.
