Honored scientist kept ties to home

Greenwood native Jim Flanagan became a pioneering scientist who won national and international awards, but he always maintained his ties to his hometown, nephew Tom Flanagan Jr. said Thursday.

James Flanagan died Tuesday at his home in Warren, New Jersey, just hours from what would have been his 90th birthday.

Council votes in favor of hospital property buy

The Greenwood City Council has approved Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s request to purchase some property on River Road, subject to the approval of the Greenwood Planning Commission.

The council voted unanimously in favor of the move at its meeting last week.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
