Inmate beaten in jail

A Leflore County Jail inmate was released from Greenwood Leflore Hospital Thursday after undergoing surgery for injuries suffered in a fight at the jail.

Marcus Bruce, 23, of 906 Martin Luther King Drive in Itta Bena said 20 to 25 inmates jumped on him early Sunday morning, breaking his ankle and severely injuring his foot and leg.

Shortage of jurors forces cancellation of circuit court

A shortage of jurors forced the cancellation of Circuit Court for this week.

Circuit Judge Betty Sanders said summonses were issued for 350 people, but only 52 people showed up. Twenty of those were used for the grand jury, and by the time others were excused for various reasons, only 17 were left.

Mayor Collins wins in Itta Bena

Itta Bena Mayor Thelma Collins won re-election Tuesday, and two new faces were chosen for the city's Board of Aldermen.

Collins defeated J.D. Brasel, 355 votes to 170. Joining the board will be Walter Parker in Ward 3 and Willie Dean in Ward 4. In the other contested race, Lousia Grantham was re-elected in Ward 2.
