Two charged with residential burglary

The Leflore County Sheriff's Department has arrested two Itta Bena youths in the burglary of a home and is looking for a third suspect.

James Stamps, 18, of 505 Martin Luther King Drive, and Harvey Holston, 17, whose address was unavailable, were arrested Saturday. Both were still in the county jail this morning.

Rain's great - up to a point

Farmers don't object to rain in June or July, but if the recent heavy precipitation continues it is likely to cause problems for the harvests.

Through Thursday, the city had received 4.41 inches of rain in August, said Jerry Singleton, county extension agent. The total rainfall for August last year was 0.41 inches.

Enrollment at MVSU up

Enrollment at Mississippi Valley State University will be up over last year, according to preliminary figures.

A total of 2,950 students are enrolled at MVSU, said Dr. Roy Hudson, vice president for university relations. This is an increase of about 9.8 percent over last fall's figure of 2,687.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
