Papers call for reduction of inmates

A Jackson attorney has filed papers ordering a reduction in the number of prisoners at the Leflore County Jail.

According to a semiannual fire safety inspection report dated July 17, the jail housed 104 prisoners. Under a 1990 court order, the maximum is 48, with no more than 24 being state prisoners.

Small-town mayors' conference at MVSU postponed until spring

A conference of Mississippi small-town mayors scheduled for Friday has been postponed until spring because of limits on air travel.

The meeting was to be held at the Sutton Administration Building on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University, with Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck delivering the main address.

Business incubator design approved

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors approved a preliminary design Monday for the planned business incubator building in Itta Bena.

Maxey Peterson of the Columbus architectural firm of Pryor and Morrow presented the design to the supervisors.

Woman charged with two store robberies

A Greenwood woman has been charged with two store robberies in addition to another robbery for which she was already in custody.

Beth Mims Gardner, 29, of 123 James St., was in the city jail this morning on $10,000 bond. She is accused of taking money from two gas stations on Sept. 22.
