5 air concerns about intersection

Five women approached the Itta Bena Board of Aldermen at Tuesday night’s meeting with concerns about what they claim is a dangerous intersection at the entrance to the town.

Two women in the group, Tasha Spivey and Mary Chandler, indicated they had lost loved ones in accidents at the intersection of U.S. 82 and Mississippi 7.

Original works of art, such as this watercolor painting by Grenada artist Robin Whitfield, will be for sale at the annual ArtPlace Holiday Market on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Prices will range from as low as $2 for small items to $3,000 for large original paintings, and artists will donate 25 percent of their sales to ArtPlace to support art programming for the community.

Annual ArtPlace Holiday Market set for Saturday

Sarah Iwanski, program coordinator for ArtPlace Mississippi, said the market is important for both the nonprofit organization and the community.

Chandler leaves hospital board

Nick Chandler has resigned from the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Board after serving for a little more than a year.

On Monday, the Leflore County Board of Supervisors accepted his resignation and approved the appointment of Emma Bell to replace him.

A lonely large Christmas tree sits on the lot this morning at Farmers Market Nursery on U.S. 82. As of early today, this fir and four smaller ones were all that remained for sale at the nursery, reflecting a widespread shortage of live Christmas trees this holiday season.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
