Drug Court gathering is time to give, reflect

Drinks weren’t flowing on Wednesday night at Orlando’s Sports Bar and Grill on Avenue F.

Instead, participants in Greenwood’s Municipal Drug Court filled booths and tables and trickled in one by one, their arms laden with toys to be donated to The Salvation Army.

Man makes request for use of his service dog

An Itta Bena citizen who depends on his service dog to help him keep his diabetes under control appeared before the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday to declare his right to bring his dog into public buildings.

Vincent Widdows and his large, red-vested dog sat through the 90-minute meeting awaiting a chance to approach the board.

Inmate fight may mean changes at jail

A fight that broke out among inmates of the Holmes-Humphreys County Regional Correctional Facility during public visitation hours on Friday might lead to suspension of visitation altogether.

Warden Barry Rule said the fight, which involved five inmates, is currently under investigation.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
