New veterans service officer named in Leflore County

Veterans in Leflore County can expect a change in command at the Veterans Service Office starting Feb. 1.

Cleo Massey, 62, a 28½-year veteran of the Army National Guard, has served for seven years as the county’s veterans service officer and is retiring effective Jan. 31.

Mayes re-elected board president

The Greenwood Public School Board unanimously re-elected Deirdre Mayes as president and Samantha Milton as secretary of the board at Thursday’s meeting.

Board member Randy Clark was absent due to illness.

Mayes, who has served as president for two terms, took the re-election in stride.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
