Leflore school absentee rate ranks low in state

The Leflore County School District has the fourth lowest rate of chronic absenteeism in the state, according to a new report from the Mississipi Department of Education.

Greenwood and Carroll County public schools, however, scored higher than the state average.

Uncollected court fines not increased

Leflore County supervisors have rejected a collection agency’s proposal that the county increase uncollected Justice Court fines by 25 percent.

Gene Newman of Mississippi Warrant Network on Monday appeared before supervisors for a second time to pitch his company’s services collecting delinquent fines.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
