The Marine Corps League of Mississippi, a veterans service organization, is taking the lead on a memorial for the 15 Marines and one Navy Corpsman who died in a northern Leflore County plane crash last July.

Dept. of Corrections proposes 300-bed facility

Leflore County supervisors heard from representatives of the Mississippi Department of Corrections Monday regarding proposed changes to be implemented at the former Delta Correctional Facility.

The facility, adjacent to the Leflore County Jail, is also used in part by the jail.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
