Forum on gun violence set Saturday

Something has to be done about gun violence in South Greenwood, says Robert Beasley of Thompson-Clemons Post 200 of the American Legion.

On Saturday at 6 p.m., the post is hosting the first gathering of what it is calling the Coalition Against Gun Violence in Greenwood.

NC church voluteers help out in Itta Bena

On Tuesday morning, the regular clients at Delta Valley Adult Day Care Center in Itta Bena had a cake walk.

Red velvet cake, pound cake, chocolate layer cake, a white cake with sprinkles and others adorned long tables the clients sat around, smiling and chatting.

A bridge to nature

The westernmost entrance into the wooded section of the Yazoo River Trail invites walkers to drop in for some “forest bathing” — known in tree-hugging circles to lower blood pressure and just about anything else that ails you.

For the uninitiated, forest bathing is nothing more than a simple walk in the woods.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
