Retiree expresses creativity with art

Ed Moultrie believes in the majesty of a castoff piece of glass.

That’s how jewelry started out, he says — as a way to use scrap stained glass. Retired from a robust career and living in Itta Bena, the 77-year-old craftsman continues to take scraps of glass and turn them into something beautiful and wearable.

Scholarship luncheon is Thursday

The Third Annual First Lady’s Scholarship Luncheon at the Historic Elks Lodge in Greenwood is set for Thursday at 11 a.m.

Deborah Bynum, the wife of Mississippi Valley State University President William Bynum, will host the effort to raise $75,000 in scholarships for deserving students in need at Valley.

It’s a celebratory kind of week at Mississippi Valley State University today through Saturday, with a packed lineup of homecoming events.

This year’s homecoming theme is “Back to the Yard,” and the campus expects to welcome back a large number of alumni as well as plenty of locals, faculty, staff and students.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
