Fire destroys Itta Bena building

Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed the old Hightower Building in Itta Bena on Tuesday night.

Itta Bena Fire Chief Vonzell Self said 23 firemen battled the blaze throughout the night and into the next day.

Local districts all earn D grades

The Greenwood, Leflore County and Carroll County school districts all received D’s in the 2016 Final Accountability Results released under the Mississippi Assessment Program (MAP). Schools are rated under the system on an A to F scale.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
