At 3 p.m. on Friday, the streets of downtown Greenwood were as empty as if a tornado warning had sounded and everyone had run inside seeking shelter. Howard Street was emptied of cars, noise and any evidence of human occupation.

It was the calm before the storm.

Man facing statutory rape charge

Greenwood police have pressed statutory rape charges against a local man accused of having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl.

Anthony Wilson, 30, 407-B Ash Street, allegedly went to Sunflower County to pick up the girl and brought her to his home. She reportedly had known Wilson before.

Mural artist Mary Lacy will be painting a giant Great Blue Heron on the side of the McBee Building at 147 Howard St. from now through Dec. 10. Here she measures out and draws lines and geometric figures before outlining the shape of the bird’s head with tape. Students from ArtPlace Mississippi will assist with painting the lower parts of the mural once the outline has been completed.

Mary Lacy may look like an average 25-year-old woman, but she can reach more than 30 feet high.

In 2015, the Vermont mural artist bought a bucket truck with a 32-foot boom. In recent months, she has set out across the country to paint 10 murals in 10 different cities.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.
