Smith court ruling upheld

Dr. Arnold Smith may be out of Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield and in a private treatment facility, but his various civil suits are still swirling around the courts.

On Tuesday, the Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed Rankin County Chancery Court’s 2015 dismissal of a Smith petition requesting outpatient treatment.

Ambulance firms make pitches

Leflore County supervisors, wrangling with complaints about emergency medical response times, heard from two ambulance companies at Monday’s meeting.

MedStat, which has provided ambulance service for Leflore County since 1999, was the object of those complaints and defended its record, promising to do better.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
