Council honors cancer fighter

The Greenwood City Council on Tuesday honored Freddie White-Johnson with a key to the city and a proclamation expressing gratitude for her work on behalf of the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation.

White-Johnson, the founder of the nonprofit cancer awareness group, said the Hamer Foundation has over 1,000 volunteers.

The 12-city tour touted as John Grisham’s “first in 25 years” appears to have skipped Greenwood in the planning phase.

Turnrow Book Co. manager Steve Iwanski said he doesn’t know why and is appealing to Grisham’s New York publisher and to the Mississippi author himself, hoping it’s an oversight.

Hospital suit dismissed due to bankruptcy

A lawsuit brought by Greenwood Leflore Hospital has been dismissed, at least momentarily, in federal court due to the defendant’s pending bankruptcy.

Stanley M. Beaty, the defendant, is accused of falsely overbilling patients at the hospital to the tune of nearly $400,000 between August 2008 and June 2015.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
