This weekend’s pork-out festival, ’Que on the Yazoo, will go down as the largest one yet for the event that has bathed downtown in barbecue smoke for the past five years.

Mentoring Group breakfast focuses on service opportunities

Supporters of the Greenwood Mentoring Group met for sausage, eggs, grits and inspiration at the organization’s 11th annual Prayer Breakfast on Saturday.

The group, led by founder Bill Clay, runs an after-school program in a small house on Avenue G in South Greenwood.

Va. Union president to speak at MVSU graduation

Mississippi Valley State University will conduct its 65th graduation ceremony on Saturday.

Conferring the commencement address will be Valley alumnus Dr. Claude Perkins, the 12th president of Virginia Union University in Richmond. Perkins is currently on sabbatical.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
