After nearly 15 years of serving parishioners at Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic churches in Greenwood, the Rev. Greg Plata is leaving the Delta.

A friar in the Franciscan tradition, he also served parishes in Winona and Lexington during his tenure here.

Wilson named to state board

Dr. Jennifer Wilson, superintendent of the Greenwood Public Schools, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents at the end of one year on the job.

“I’m honored to serve as a member of the MASS board and to represent District 2,” Wilson said.

Restored Till marker rededicated

The rededication of a defaced historical marker Tuesday drew a healthy crowd to the site of the former Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market on Money Road.

The marker honors the life and death of Emmett Till, a Chicago 14-year-old who was murdered after whistling at Carolyn Bryant, a white woman.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
