Baseball is the best thing about spring

Spring has arrived - the flowers are blooming and the birds are singing. The farmers are plowing up ground and preparing for another crop year. The children are looking forward to planning their upcoming summer vacation. Those of us who enjoy gardening can't wait to start digging in the garden or flower beds.

Remembering the 'ghost' town of Pugh City

If you have had occasion to travel down Mississippi 7 through Itta Bena, Morgan City and Swiftown, or perhaps to Belzoni, you crossed a concrete bridge just past Swiftown. This bridge traverses Beckham Bayou and as you exited the bridge you may have noticed on your right what appears to have been a row of stores.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
