Ardarrius Haslett, 3, enjoys a dip in the city pool Tuesday. The pool is open Monday through Friday 1-3 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. The pool is open on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The pool also is open on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-8. Swimming lesson are taught from 8-9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Daycare also is available.

Tree trimming begins

A Greenwood bucket truck rolled down South Boulevard Monday as crews from the Public Works Department trimmed trees on city property along the street.

Mayor Harry Smith said the work is part of the city's regular and ongoing program to maintain trees on city property.

Chamber readies for July 4th festival

The United States will turn 225 years old this year, and the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce is planning to celebrate with the city's annual Fourth of July Festival.

Jim Bowen, chairman of this year's event, said the 2001 festival will be similar to last year's event but with more activities and a bigger fireworks show.

Man dies after wrestling match

TCHULA - A wrestling match Thursday evening between two men in the Thornton community of Holmes County resulted in the death of Tchula man, Sheriff Willie March said today.

Joey Stanley Thornton, 46, was found dead Friday at his home, evidently from injuries sustained the previous evening, March said.
