57 percent: The number of Boys & Girls Club alumni who said said in a national survey that the club “saved their life.”

What’s the word for a word lover?

Merriam-Webster announced its 2011 Word of the Year Thursday: “pragmatic.”

The word, an adjective that means practical and logical, was looked up frequently on Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary. It seems like a fitting word for the tough times the world is experiencing.

Past sadly relevant in killing

Early last Saturday morning, Repredto Reed became Greenwood’s seventh homicide victim of 2011.

He was shot once in the chest on Jackson Street near the Howard Street intersection. As of Thursday, police had yet to make an arrest in Reed’s slaying.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
