Daughter keeps spreading her wings

My daughter Amy is going to perform her senior recital this weekend at Loyola University in New Orleans.

Three weeks after that, Amy will get her degree in musical performance. I’m going to be very proud on graduation day, but I might need a pair of binoculars to see her. The commencement will be in the Superdome.

Pound-wise to stop circulating pennies

Has the penny’s time passed? Is it time to change our change?

Canada will soon withdraw the penny from circulation. Australia, Brazil, Sweden and Switzerland have already done the same. Many say it’s time the United States dumped the penny, too.

Cheap does in Laurel paper

The Laurel Leader-Call published its last edition on Thursday. It was certainly a sad day for the 18 employees who lost their jobs and, I think, a sad day for its readers.

Unfortunately, there weren’t as many readers of the Leader-Call as there used to be.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
