A lot of waffling on the state flag

The current debate over the Mississippi state flag appears to have turned state politics into the Waffle House.

The problem with Mississippi’s current flag is that it contains a Confederate battle emblem in its upper left corner.

Land donated for wildlife refuge

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann came to Greenwood on Tuesday to accept the donation of 293 acres north of Greenwood for a wildlife preserve.

The land surrounds Six Mile Lake, located near Money. Hosemann estimated the value of the land at $750,000.

Football overload is just about to begin

If you don’t like football (American football, I mean, not soccer or the Canadian game), I have bad news. Starting on Sunday, there will be at least one football game on television every week from now until Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016.

Mississippi high schools kick off on Aug. 21, colleges on Sept. 5 and the NFL on Sept. 10.

War stories change with time

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
