Latest ‘Joker’ is most disturbing

MADISON — The film “Joker” is based on a comic book, but its themes are serious and disturbing.

Batman first appeared in comic books in 1939. The Joker debuted in 1940 and quickly became the Caped Crusader’s archenemy. Cesar Romero played him for laughs in the 1960s live-action Batman television show and movie.

Boyce hiring: IHL business as usual

MADISON — Rebel Nation has been roiled by the recent hiring of Glenn Boyce as the new chancellor of the University of Mississippi.

The state Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees’ lack of transparency and political cronyism in Boyce’s hiring is nothing new, if you’ve been paying attention to the state College Board.

MADISON — The Mississippi State Fair will begin its annual run in Jackson on Oct. 2, for good and bad.

Good because children of all ages love the fair.

There’s the judging of livestock, food and crafts. That’s what fairs were originally about.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
