JACKSON - The historic irony was inescapable: In the same chamber where 140 years earlier Mississippi seceded from the Union, declaring its right to hold black people in bondage, a biracial gathering of Mississippians honored a martyred black Mississippian who 40 years ago died leading his people to finally gain civil rights long denied to them.
