Coast school wins on field, too

JACKSON - High school football is normally not on my beat. But I confess that I rooted for the Ocean Springs High Greyhounds to win the state 5-A public high school football championship played here a week ago.

They didn't. South Panola, the nationally ranked high school juggernaut from Batesville, did. Score 39-21.

JACKSON - When Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act he declared: "there goes the Democratic Party in the South."

How true LBJ's prophesy has become. When Johnson signed the bill, Democrats held 98 percent of Senate seats and 90 percent of House seats from Southern states.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
