Board of Supervisors dumps Gary as county administrator

Leflore County Chancery Clerk Johnny Gary Jr. is out as county administrator.
On Tuesday, the first meeting of a new term, the county Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to instead appoint longtime Tax Assessor Leroy Ware to serve as the interim county administrator while it advertises for a permanent replacement.

Teen killed in apparent hunting accident in Carroll County

An Ocean Springs teenager was killed Friday in what authorities say was a fatal hunting accident in Carroll County.
Hayden Bonta, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Coroner Mark Stiles from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
