2021 marks the 125th year of continuous publication of this newspaper, making the Commonwealth one of the oldest businesses in Greenwood.

Hospital has vaccines

Greenwood Leflore Hospital expects to inoculate 200 of its workers Tuesday with a COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccines, manufactured by Moderna, are the first to make it to the Greenwood hospital. They were delivered Monday. More doses are expected to come each week afterward.

MDOC: salt lamps, scandalous spending

Mississippi’s Department of Corrections decided a couple of years ago that its employees just needed to meditate some to lower the stress of their job. To put them in the mood, MDOC bought a truckload of massage chairs, Himalayan salt lamps and other accoutrements.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
