Rankins: Universities should survive ‘enrollment cliff’

Mississippi’s eight public universities are positioned to survive the anticipated drop in people of college age for one main reason, according to the state’s higher education commissioner.
The cost of attending them is reasonable.
And, Dr. Alfred Rankins Sr. says, Mississippi needs to keep it that way.

Brett Favre plays the victim

Brett Favre wants us to feel sorry for him. He says he’s being unfairly raked over the coals, his reputation tarnished, over a welfare scandal in which he was an unwitting participant.
And now the NFL Hall of Fame quarterback tells us, eight months after the diagnosis, that he has Parkinson’s disease.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
