Stars & Stripes fest returns Thursday

Finally, after a two-year hiatus, Greenwood’s popular, family friendly Stars & Stripes festival is being relaunched Thursday, and organizers are excited.
“You might say the third time is the charm,” said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.

Hospital reps in talks with UMMC

Parole hearing for '82 killing planned

Earlier this summer, the family of a murder victim asked Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks to speak up against parole for one of the two men convicted in the death.
“I did make that call. I don’t know whether it helped or not,” Banks said. “I have tried to block it every time it comes up.”

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
