Valley, Tom Joyner working to raise scholarship funds

Schools seek Foundation for the Mid South support

Greenwood Public Schools administrators say they hope the district will know by March 1 whether the school system will receive a $150,000 grant from the Foundation for the Mid South.

The School Board Tuesday approved the district's application for the 21st Century Academies of Learning money.

Camellias are in bloom again this winter as the temperatures drift back and forth from cold to warm. This one is dripping with this morning's rainfall. The late winter favorite is a japonica, which means its buds usually open in February, but this bush had a load of blossoms in mid-December.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
