Special prosecutor to be named in Johnson case

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors expects to name a special prosecutor in a simple assault case against District 5 Supervisor Larry "Kite" Johnson.

Richard Oakes, county prosecuting attorney, wrote a letter to the board explaining he would not prosecute the case because of a conflict of interest.

2005 Lenten Luncheons

The Greenwood-Leflore Ministerial Association's annual series of Lenten Luncheons began with a gathering of 200 people Wednesday -Ash Wednesday -at First United Methodist Church. The brown-bag luncheons are open to the public and are being held at the church at 11:30 a.m.

County wants tax to fix Civic Center

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors wants to tack another percentage point onto the sales tax collected by the hospitality industry in Greenwood and Leflore County.

The extra money from raising the tax for hotel and restaurant customers from 8 percent to 9 would be used to repair and maintain the Leflore County Civic Center.

Celebrating trees

Leflore County will observe Arbor Day with the distribution of free trees at 10 a.m. Friday by the Leflore County Soil & Water Conservation District along with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Mississippi Forestry Commission. The location will be Fred's Dollar Store on U.S. 82 in Eastgate Shopping Center.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
