Brazen thief takes gasoline from car in 'broad daylight'

Somebody got a real steal on gas by siphoning a half-tank from a parked car in what the unwilling supplier says was "in the broad daylight" Friday afternoon.

Jean Cadney, business development specialist for Greenwood Utilities, says she's probably out about $16 in regular unleaded because of the theft.

Police chief plans to retire June 30

Greenwood Police Chief Ronnie White will retire June 30 after 41 years in law enforcement.

Deputy Chief Henry Harris, 50, 24-year Police Department veteran, will serve as acting chief, Mayor Harry Smith said Wednesday.

He said a search for a new chief will be conducted.

Harris said he will apply for the job.

Viking Range Corp. has asked the Greenwood City Council to close about 300 feet of Front Street from Main Street to Walthall, dead-ending at Veterans Bridge. Viking wants to build an outdoor cooking and training pavilion on the Yazoo River bank across from the company's training center at the intersection.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
