County seeks feds' help to give shelter to storm victims

Leflore County officials have asked for federal help in accommodating refugees from the Mississippi and Louisiana coast and were waiting today to learn whether military facilities can be opened to house hurricane victims.

The Civic Center and Agricenter, although designated emergency shelters, were not opened.

That was Toni Howell's situation as she looked at getting on the road to Texas, where there are relatives, Tuesday night.

City tax rate to fall but collections to rise

The city of Greenwood won't be raising taxes in the upcoming fiscal year to fund its general operating expenses.

But state-mandated increases and bond-retirement payments will require extra tax collections, perhaps amounting to $253,000.

Trial set in negligence suit against city

A lawsuit claiming that negligence by the city of Greenwood led to the 2002 sexual battery of a mentally retarded Greenwood woman will go to trial Monday in Leflore County Circuit Court.

The city denies the allegation.
