New signs warn of unused railroad tracks

Trains can't travel east-west all the way through Greenwood these days because of the new railroad bypass.

And the section of track east of the railroad depot on Carrollton is "dead" past Mississippi 7.

All the same, the city is having to paint warning signs on pavement at crossings.

African Methodist Episcopal Bishop C. Garnett Henning Sr. joined another minister as he led a group of several hundred in prayer.

They had listened intently as the Rev. Michael W. Waters, senior pastor of 117-year A.M.E. church in Grand Prairie, Texas, was preaching, booming over loud speakers.

Brother on girl's mind at her birthday party

Young Bethany Lott had her turn Tuesday evening, although she didn't want it at first.

Bethany - Beth - turned 4 on July 3, but was just getting to have a party. She reluctantly left her baby brother, little Doug Lott, in a Jackson hospital to travel back to Greenwood for the celebration.

It's a clean sweep

She was among PAPA board members helping to prepare the school for its new year, which is less than a month away. Besides cleaning trophy cases, the group is planning to rehang Pillow's framed composite portraits of the school's graduating classes. Orientation will be on Aug. 16, followed by the first full day on Aug. 17.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
