The Episcopal Church of the Nativity is sending money for flood relief to the diocese in Louisiana. The church collected $5,675 on Aug. 21. Its outreach committee will provide $500, and the Episcopal Church Women are holding a gumbo sale starting at noon Friday. Sales will continue as long as the gumbo holds out. Prices are $10 for a pint and $20 for a quart, and every cent will be sent to Louisiana. Chef Taylor Bowen Ricketts, an ECW member and owner of Fan and Johnny’s, will do the cooking. About a year ago, Leslie Jordan felt unwell, went to Greenwood Leflore Hospital and learned he was having a heart attack.

The Greenwood welding supplies salesman was told he immediately needed to travel to a hospital in Jackson. Speed was important. Did he want to go by helicopter? He opted for trip by regular ambulance.

Air ambulance cost can be painful surprise

In February, a 64-year-old Greenwood man was flown by air ambulance to a Jackson hospital, where he later died from a head injury.

Afterward, his widow received a $50,950 bill from a Colorado company, Rocky Mountain Holdings LLC, for the flight from Greenwood to Jackson.

First responders assist Terry Allen Brooks of Greenwood after the SUV he was driving was hit by a freight train at the Carrollton Avenue crossing Friday afternoon. Brooks was treated at Greenwood Leflore Hospital and then released. A passenger, Larry Johnson, remained hospitalized Saturday in good condition. Train, SUV collide

Two men survived a vehicle-train accident on Carrollton Avenue Friday that wrecked the SUV in which they were traveling and left a witness distraught.

“That vehicle was trying to beat the train!” Willie Priestly of Greenwood said. “He was trying to do the S thing!”
