A better shelter

Well over three years ago, the Leflore County Humane Society began plans to build a new animal shelter to replace its longtime facility on Ione Street in Greenwood.

It took a while to obtain a new site and raise money for construction and for the shelter to be built and populated at its new location on Cypress Avenue and Baldwin Road.

Community Food Pantry needs donations

The Community Food Pantry is having a hard time getting resupplied with some staples because of the COVID-19 crisis.

So people are being asked to share what they have or can get with the pantry, which normally contributes food to 700 Leflore County families a month.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
