Virus prompts big changes in schools for fall

This time last year, the overriding concern for the soon-to-be-formed Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District was how to effectively conduct the merger of two school systems.

Now, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, discussion centers on how school will be held for the district’s roughly 4,700 students this fall.

84 Amanda Elzy students to receive diplomas Wednesday

The Amanda Elzy High School Class of 2020 will receive diplomas during a 9:30 a.m. ceremony Wednesday outside the Leflore County Civic Center.

The school will graduate 84 seniors, including Juliauna White, valedictorian, and Christian Glass, salutatorian. White said their final grade point averages are not yet available.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
