Greenwood drops division opener, 26-12

The loss drops Greenwood to 1-5 overall. East Side improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the division standings.

Murder suspect arrested in Greenwood

A man wanted for murder in Illinois is in custody after being arrested Saturday in Greenwood.

Federal marshals arrested Anthony Sherrod, 22, of 1360 E. Chestnut in Kankakee, Ill., after a joint investigation with county authorities, the Central Illinois Fugitive Task Force and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.

GHS graduate to lead state National Guard

JACKSON - A Greenwood High School graduate has been named leader of the Mississippi National Guard, and he plans to intensify the Guard's recruiting efforts.

Brig. Gen. James Lipscomb III said after his Thursday hiring that an outreach campaign could help reverse the shrinking number of reserves.

City Council clerk killed in car wreck Wednesday

A popular figure around Greenwood’s City Hall for more than a dozen years died Wednesday night in a one-car accident.

Bessie Campbell, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene after her car ran off Humphrey Highway and struck a tree.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
